If you can reach a service online, it means that it can be attacked as well. IT department takes measures to prevent attackers steal any information from university IT systems. However no matter how many walls are placed around your machine, there is always a key for complete access: your password.

If your account is owned by a malicious user this is a potential security threat for all common university systems as well. Your role in protecting your own account is much more important than you think!

Strong password guideline for KU accounts

Your password:

must be different from the current
must be at least 8 characters
must not be a word from a dictionary
must not be easily guessable
must contain characters from different classes (upper and lower-case letters, letters and symbols, letters and numbers, punctuation etc.)

Having a strong password and remembering is easier than you think!

For example you can first pick a phrase, then pick all the first or last letters from each word and substitute some letters with numbers and symbols. For instance you may want to use the infamous catch phrase of The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy: So long and thanks for all the fish. Pick the first letters:slatfatf, make it stronger: Sl&tfatF! (don’t forget to include the exclamation mark!)

We also strongly recommend

using 2 Factor Authentication where possible (Google, Facebook and Twitter already let you!)
using unique passwords for every account you have
not writing your passwords anywhere that anyone can see
not sharing your passwords with anyone including the IT staff
